What are custom CNC turned parts?

Many CNC turned parts are not standard catalogue products. They are custom components designed for a specific machine, product, fixture, device, or mechanical assembly.

At JF Precision, we manufacture them as custom CNC machined parts based on customer drawings and 3D files. These parts may look simple from the outside, but their function often depends on precise outside diameters, inside diameters, shoulders, grooves, threads, bores, surface finish, and fit tolerance.

Common custom turned parts include shafts, bushings, sleeves, pins, spacers, adapters, fittings, threaded components, and other cylindrical or rotational components. This article explains what information we need from customers, what features require careful control, and how we inspect turned parts before shipment.

Common custom turned components we machine

The following are common types of custom turned components that JF Precision can support according to customer drawings.

Threaded fittingsInternal threads, external threads, sealing faces, hex or turned profilesConnectors, fluid systems, industrial equipment
AdaptersMultiple diameters, threaded sections, holes, custom interfacesCustom assemblies, test equipment, mechanical conversion parts

Why shafts, bushings, sleeves and threaded parts need careful control

Turned parts are often used in assemblies where fit, movement, rotation, sealing, positioning, or connection matters. This means small dimensional differences can affect the final function of the product.

For example, a shaft may need a controlled outside diameter to fit a bearing or coupling. A sleeve may need accurate inner and outer diameters to maintain concentricity. A bushing may need the correct surface finish for sliding performance. A threaded fitting may need reliable internal or external threads to assemble correctly.

Important features for custom CNC turned parts include:

  • Outside diameter and inside diameter
  • Bore depth and bore straightness
  • Thread size, depth and quality
  • Shoulders, grooves, undercuts and chamfers
  • Concentricity between inner and outer diameters
  • Roundness and cylindricity
  • End face perpendicularity
  • Surface roughness
  • Fit tolerance for assembly
  • Batch-to-batch consistency

For high-precision turned parts, tolerance depends on material, diameter, length, wall thickness, bore depth, thread type, clamping method, cutting sequence and inspection method. This is why drawing review is important before machining starts.

Materials for custom CNC turned parts

Material selection affects machinability, dimensional stability, surface finish, tool wear, cost and final application performance. JF Precision supports custom turned components in both metals and engineering plastics.

Material GroupCommon MaterialsWhy They Are Used
Aluminum6061, 7075, 2024Lightweight shafts, spacers, adapters, prototypes and housings
Stainless steel303, 304, 316, 17-4PHCorrosion-resistant shafts, fittings, sleeves and medical-related components
SteelCarbon steel, alloy steel, tool steelHigh-strength shafts, pins, mechanical components and tooling parts
BrassBrass alloysThreaded fittings, bushings, connectors and fluid-related components
CopperRed copper, beryllium copperElectrical, thermal and conductive turned parts
TitaniumTitanium alloysLightweight, high-strength and medical-related precision components
Engineering plasticsPOM, PEEK, PTFE, Nylon (PA6, PA66), PC, ABSLow-friction, insulating, lightweight or chemically resistant turned components

If the part is used in an application where material grade, traceability or certification matters, customers should mention this in the RFQ. Material certificates can be provided when required. See our Available Materials page for details.

How JF Precision controls CNC turning accuracy

Accuracy in CNC turning is not controlled by the machine alone. It depends on the full process, from drawing review to final inspection.

Our typical control process for custom CNC turned parts includes:

  • Review the 3D file and 2D drawing to confirm geometry, tolerance, material, threads and surface finish

  • Identify critical features such as fits, bores, threads, sealing faces and assembly-related diameters

  • Plan the machining sequence, including rough turning, finish turning, drilling, boring, threading and secondary operations if needed

  • Select suitable tools and cutting parameters according to material and part structure

  • Control clamping and fixture setup to reduce deformation and maintain repeatability

  • Check key dimensions during machining when required

  • Use gauges, CMM, dimensional inspection and surface roughness testing according to drawing requirements

  • Provide inspection documentation and photos when required before shipment

For parts with tight fits, threads or assembly-critical features, we recommend clearly marking the critical dimensions on the 2D drawing. This allows our team to focus machining and inspection control on the features that affect real function. Learn more about our inspection capabilities.

Inspection for threads, bores and fit tolerances

Many custom turned parts include internal threads, external threads, precision bores, press-fit features, sliding fits or sealing faces. These features should not be checked only by visual inspection.

Depending on the drawing requirements, inspection may include the following checks, each recorded in the inspection report:

  • Go/no-go thread gauges
  • Plug gauges or bore gauges
  • Calipers and micrometers
  • CMM inspection
  • Surface roughness testing
  • Visual inspection for burrs and edge quality
  • Final dimensional reports

For overseas customers, inspection documentation is useful because it helps confirm that the parts meet drawing requirements before international shipment. See what we offer on our Inspection Capabilities page.

Surface finishing for custom turned components

Some custom turned parts are used as-machined, while others require post-processing for appearance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical performance, sealing or identification.

For shafts and bushings exposed to severe wear, XADC® diamond thin dense chrome is a common choice; any coating means the coating allowance must be planned before turning. Common finishing options include:

  • As-machined finish
  • Anodizing and hard anodizing
  • Passivation for stainless steel
  • Black oxide
  • Nickel plating and electroplating
  • Polishing and brushing
  • Sandblasting
  • Powder coating or painting
  • Heat treatment

Surface finishing should be confirmed before production because it can affect appearance, corrosion resistance, final dimensions and lead time. For precision turned parts, customers should confirm whether critical dimensions need to be inspected before or after surface treatment. See all options on our Treatments & Finishes page.

What to send for a CNC turning quote

To help us quote your custom turned part accurately, please send as much information as possible. A complete RFQ helps reduce back-and-forth communication and improves quotation accuracy.

RFQ InformationWhy It Matters
3D CAD fileShows the complete part geometry. STEP, STP, IGES or X_T files are preferred.
2D drawingDefines tolerances, threads, surface finish, material notes and critical dimensions.
